So far, the book, "Weedflower" written by Cynthia Kadohata, tells the story of a Japanese girl, named Sumiko, who lives in America. The story takes place in the 1940s.
Sumiko is a rather lonely girl who doesn't have many friends in her neighbourhood. Her parents passed away when she was younger, and their cause of death has not been revealed yet. When she receives an invite to a party from a person in her class, Sumiko is elated, but before she can decide which dress she will wear, she must first complete her chores. She cleans the horse, Baba, with her brother, Tak-Tak, then she grades the flowers so that the best ones can be sold at higher prices than the flowers with deformities (brown leaves, splits, etc.) . She has many other chores but cleaning the horse and grading the flowers are the ones that she looks forward to the most.
After completing her chores, Sumiko is finally able to choose her garments for the party.
